Around the Circle With Oberon-Zell Ravenheart

Oberon Zell - Church of All Worlds - Gifts for Mystics

Oberon Zell-Ravenheart is a psychologist, metaphysician, theologian, naturalist, artist, inventor, carpenter, sculptor, teacher, author and Priest. When talking with him, you can tell you have his attention, and with genuine interest. He reminds one fast of talented polymaths like Leonardo da Vinci or JRR Tolkien and he has the rare ability to engage almost anyone in conversation (on about almost any subject).

History

An important Neopagan figure, Oberon co-founded of the Church Of All Worlds in 1962. He began the Neopagan magazine Green Egg in 1968 where he eventually published the first essay to mention the Gaia Theory in 1971, titled “TheaGenesis”. With his soulmate Morning Glory, he began the Unicorn Project in 1979. Grey School of Wizardry is one more accomplishment, began in 2004.

Oberon has played a major role in the founding and unification of the Pagan community, and in reclaiming the Earth/Nature-based spiritual heritage of pre-Christian Europe. ..He was the first to adopt the terms “Pagan” and “Neo-Pagan” to describe the newly-emerging Nature religions of the 1960s. The Neo-Pagan “Green Religion” is now considered to be one of the fastest-growing spiritual movement in the English-speaking world, claiming more than five million adherents worldwide. And Oberon is acknowledged as one of its founding Elders: “The Father of Neo-Paganism.” —from his biography here.

He was featured on the Nation Geographic show Unicorns and Mermaids? This Real-Life Wizard Will Make You a Believer | Short Film Showcase. Watch it below!

Around the Circle: An Interview with Oberon Zell-Ravenheart

I

Alex: What is the one interview question you are never asked, but wish you were?
Oberon: What do you wish to be remembered for 100 years after you die? A thousand?
[When asked to answer this very question, Oberon seems almost surprised: “Really? That would require a whole essay!” Always fascinating to speak to, he then says, “What do readers think?”]

II

Alex: What is the most important thing that a human should think of when they first wake up?
Oberon: “What can I do today to make a positive difference? To someone? To the world?”

III

Alex: Would you say that today’s technology makes Paganism easier, or sometimes harder?
Oberon: Definitely much easier.

IV

Alex: How have media attitudes towards eccentricity, weirdness, and mysticism changed over the decades?
Oberon: Enormously. We are no longer scary, but fascinating.

V

Alex: What is the strangest thing that you own [personally, to you], not necessarily magickal in nature?
Oberon: A genuine Unicorn skull.

VI

Alex: What is something that you still wish to do in future?
Oberon: Write many more books; visit Egypt and Thailand; ride in a hot-air balloon; skydive; have one of those propeller-powered paraplane backpacks and fly around with it…
